THE TRUTH?
How shocking is this? I was talking with a 17-year-old student who moved here from Mexico two years ago. I asked her if she had any brothers or sisters and she said she had younger brother and a twin. Who died. A month ago! What in the world? Is that true? Stop, think about that situation, and tell me what you would say to that.
I didn't know how to respond and so I asked about her other sibling, the younger brother. She said he is in Mexico and she doesn't really know him, and he doesn't live with her family. That was about all I could handle, and I didn't know if I was asking too much, so the conversation ended right there.
Crazy, huh?

That will probably not be the last time you will hear a story such as hers. Yes, it is sad. Yet, from the way you relayed it, she sounds strong, and I get the sense that she has found a gift of compassion through her loss.
There is no need to say anything to her. You are already listening.
You have such a big heart, my friend. What a gift to have you in any classroom.
Michelle :)
PS. For a much lighter topic, in regards to a 17 yr old sharing personal info, visit my blog for an extremely embarrassing bout of TMI. I'll bet this has never happened to you in the classroom. Check it out. Yikes...
